G-O-O-D-C-O-O-K-I-N-G!

It’s always an enthusiastic tribute to the cooks when this chant, with its accompanying table slaps and clapping, rings throughout the Big A after yet another amazing Camp Bow-Isle meal. Campers are undoubtedly blessed with the love and nourishment they receive at camp and MGF (more good food!) is a cherished part of that. The kitchen is the place where it happens!

Originally under a tent in the Orchard, the kitchen moved into the Big A when it was built in 1962. It was expanded in 2010 to add a dishwashing station that was not in the middle of the cook’s prep area. Equipment and appliances, some donated, some purchased, have been in service for decades, but many are not running efficiently and need replacing.

Building code requirements have also changed over the years. During the last strategic planning meeting, the Board and other camp supporters pinpointed a kitchen renovation as a priority capital project. A planning committee has been working diligently over the past year to develop a plan that will accomplish these 5 major goals:

  • Bring the kitchen into compliance with current building and safety codes.
  • Provide cooking appliances/equipment to serve effectively and efficiently for decades to come.
  • Update cold food storage to be energy and use efficient.
  • Optimize other storage and workflow via new work stations/cabinets and minor layout changes.
  • Maintain the rustic nature and camp atmosphere of this important space at the heart of camp including camper participation in the famous “duties”.

The joyful and productive activity that happens in the kitchen will of course, stay the same!

The committee has been working with a BC-based company that does commercial kitchen planning and the blueprints are ready! Of course, implementing this project will require more resources. Supporting prayer and financial contributions would be much appreciated. We will provide periodic updates on the website, and we hope you will contribute as possible to this important project.

Keeping in mind that “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need”, we are embarking on the next phase and submitting the plans to the municipality for approval. We hope to begin construction in the fall and have all the work completed in time for the 2020 camp season — you can help us make it to the finish line!

With gratitude and love,

Camp Bow-Isle Board of Directors
