Welcome to BIOC!

At the Bow-Isle Outdoor Centre students will be challenged, supported, and listened to by our leaders and instructors. Surrounded by nature, students and teachers will participate in activities outside the classroom learning to communicate more effectively, encouraging growth mindset, and promoting self-confidence. Our facilities are nestled in a luscious green valley on Nex̱wlélex̱wm (Bowen Island), just a short ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in the Lower Mainland.

Here are some of the activities we offer:

Rock Climbing: Our 25-foot rock climbing tower has 7 climbing routes with different levels of difficulty. BIOC instructors teach students how to mentally and physically prepare for a fun and safe rock climbing session. Campers then climb a route of their choosing to gain new heights.

High Ropes Course: At Camp Bow-Isle, we have a high ropes course for groups in grade 6 and older. This challenge by choice course allows students to build trust with others and themselves. Instructors are trained in current belaying techniques, and certified ropes course supervisor is always present. The ropes course was built and is inspected regularly by Project Adventure and AdventureWorks.

Team-building initiatives: In addition to our high ropes course, we have a low ropes course with fun initiatives for students to work collaboratively and problem-solve. At the end of each activity, we take time for reflection–an opportunity for students to make connections and learn useful applications of working with others.

Kayaking and Canoeing: Bow-Isle has a fleet of kayaks that are a terrific complement to the canoes on the camp lake. Campers will learn proper paddling strokes and the importance of wearing a lifejacket when they’re on the water.

Campfire Building: Learning how to build a campfire is a life skill. Some use it for survival, but most use it to stay warm in the chilly winter months, or best yet while camping! At BIOC, students are taught how to safely build a campfire using nature’s natural resources.

Ecology Hikes: If you’re familiar with Bowen Island, you know there are so many great trails to explore! During your program, we’ll take you on a hike or two, to learn about the relationship between plants, animals, and people. You might also get to see beautiful vistas, while enjoying a fun conversation with those in your group.

Archery: Archery enables campers to practice accuracy, consistency and discipline.

Group Games: We play games to have fun, but most importantly get allow students and teachers to get to know each other in a new light. Our BIOC instructors know plenty of games to play when games are scheduled or not, and we all have a terrific time playing them together!

Campfire Night: Gathering around the campfire at BIOC means singing, storytelling, being silly, and best of all, toasting a marshmallows or two with friends. This is an incredibly fun part of the program we love sharing!

All of our activities are adapted to create a customized curriculum for your group’s objectives and goals. We can work with up to 70 students per day and and 50 students for overnight programs. Contact us to determine the exact costs for your group.

We can’t wait to welcome you to BIOC!
